Smith Shines as Men's Soccer Flies Past Wheaton 3-1

NORTON, Mass.- The Keene State College men's soccer team scored two goals in the first half, leading the way for a 3-1 victory at Diane C. Nordin Field over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon.

  • Keene State: 3-0-0
  • Wheaton (Mass.): 2-2-0

How it Happened

The Owls got the ball rolling early in the first half, as Connor Downey took a pass from Emmanuel Smith and potted it in the back of the net, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. KSC collected the first three shots in the game, registering the one goal from Downey in the process.  Keene State would double the lead when Emmanuel Smith was able to find the back of the net in the 25th minute, giving the Owls the 2-0 lead on a breakaway that left Smith streaking up the left side of the field all alone.   KSC outshot Wheaton 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

The Lyons would bounce back after halftime and score what proved to be their only goal of the game when junior Brady Smith picked up the first goal of his career, cutting the Owls lead in half in the 55th minute.  Smith was able to find the back of the net off of a free kick, giving the Lyons some life early in the second half.  Both the Owls and the Lyons would keep pace with each other in the ladder stages on the second half, matching shot for shot.

The Owls would get some insurance via a late goal by freshman James McCully, as he was able to take the corner kick feed from Emmanuel Smith and knock in his second career goal as an Owl to give Keene State the 3-1 lead. Following the goal from McCully, the Lyons were able to get two shots away, both wide of the goal guarded by Anthony Pasciuto, finalizing the game and giving the Owls a 3-1 victory.
