PAWTUCKET, R.I.--Keene State College outdoor track and field standouts Lauren Perkowski and Shannon Parks received major awards from the Little East Conference, it was announced today. Perkowski was named as the LEC Female Track Athlete of the Year, while Parks was named as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year.
The award caps off a banner year for Perkowski, who was also named as the LEC Runner of the Year during the 2018 Cross Country and 2018-19 Indoor Track and Field seasons. In the outdoor season, she was named the LEC Track Athlete of the Week on April 15, and led the Owls to a second place finish at the conference championship meet on April 27. At the LEC championship, she dominated the distance events, winning both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and earned All-New England honors at the New England Division III Championships on May 4. Her 10,000 meter time of 37:13.57 is currently 39th in the country. Perkowski is the first winner since 2011, when Amy Knoblock won the award. Other KSC winners include Jennifer Adams (2008) and Allison Chamberlain (2009, 2010).
Parks doubled her award tally for the year, having also won the LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year award for the indoor season. She was the LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week three times this season, while helping KSC to a second place finish at the LEC Championship on April 27. She set a new school record in the shotput at 12.05 meters, breaking an 11 year old mark and outpacing previous record holder Bryanna Brown by .17 meters. She was also second in the LEC Championships in the discus (33.16 meters) and 13th in the hammer (31.50 meters). Parks joins Brown as the only two winners of the award in KSC history.
