Owls return from Europe with memories and motivation

KEENE, N.H. 8/25/09 - The Keene State women's soccer team returned from their nine-day trip to Europe with a scrapbook full of memories and renewed motivation as they get set to begin their 2009 season.

"The trip was amazing," said Nora Mahoney, a junior from Belchertown, Mass. "It was a great balance between site-seeing, soccer, and bonding."

The Owls spent the first few days of their trip in Barcelona, where they got to take in the city's culture and history. Sunbathing and shopping were next on the agenda in Cannes and Nice, France. The team wrapped up its stay in Monaco.

"Our days were packed," said Jaclyn Grant, a senior from Newington, Conn. "We'd wake up in the morning and go for a jog or sprint on the beach and then tour all day."

Walking through the streets of Barcelona and southern France, the players were treated to a hands-on history lesson. "Our guide showed us everything and told us the history of buildings and museums," said Mahoney.

The Owls also played three games against club teams, posting a 2-1 record. While KSC relied on its aggressive and physical style of play, the European players impressed the Owls with their finesse. "Their touches were unbelievable," said Grant. "They would play balls that would land right on their foot. But we held our own."

"It's interesting to see the contrast in how different countries play the game," said junior Katie Bradford from Lebanon.

Returning home, the players felt they were fortunate to have this unique experience. Many Owls, including Mahoney, caught the travel bug. "The trip made me want to go and visit other countries, "she said. "I love Keene, but it's great to see different cultures and different worlds."
