W. Soccer: Owls Fall to Williams 4-1

KEENE, N.H. 9/9/07 - Williams College scored two goals in each half on the way to posting a 4-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over Keene State at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday.

The Ephs (2-0) controlled play throughout the game which was halted with 11:41 to play due to a driving rain storm.  Keene State falls to 3-2.

"Williams is one of the best teams we'll play and we just tried to come out as hard as we can," said Michelle Boland, who scored KSC's lone goal in the second half.  "Hopefully we can use this game as a learning experience."

"After the game, I told the players if you want to go to nationals or win the LEC you're going to play teams of this caliber," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons. "You have to mark a team like this a lot tighter.  We didn't. We gave them room to play around and they dominated us. The better team won today."

Williams missed several strong scoring opportunities in the early going.  A shot by Jessie Freeman (Charlestown, Mass.) just went over the cross bar three minutes into the game.  The Ephs took a 1-0 lead at the 6:21 mark when Brianna Wolfson (Brookville, N.Y.) scored after taking lead pass from Ana Sani (Scarsdale, N.Y.).

KSC goalie Samantha Hirsh (Holliston, Mass.) kept it a one goal game after coming out to stop a break-away shot from Freeman.

The Ephs had another chance to score later in the half.  Hirsh tipped a shot from Annelise Snyder (Ashby, Mass.) and Owl defender Amy St. John (Barre, Vt.) cleared the ball before it could get into the net. Kaolin McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass.) put the Ephs ahead 2-0 on a shot from the top of the box into the far right corner.

Earlier in the second half, Sani's shot, following a foul, was tipped over the cross bar by Hirsh.  Gabrielle Woodson (Plano, Tx.) gave Willams a 3-0 lead when she put a rebound past Hirsh at the 55:52 mark.

Boland (Worcester, Mass.) got KSC on the board at the 61:36 mark when she lofted a high shot from 30-yards out into the top corner of the net. It was Boland's third goal of the season.

Clare Gallagher (Cransford, N.J.) completed with the scoring at 70:31 on a break-away goal.
Hirsh finished the game with 10 saves. Lauren Sinnenberg (Westfield, N.J.) and Julia Schreiber (Cockeysville, MD) both saw action in goal for the Ephs and didn't record a save.

Keene State travels to Smith College on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.).
