Sawyer leads Division III in two statistical categories
KEENE, N.H., 4/30/10 – Keene State College’s Griffin Meehan and Lauren Sawyer lead NCAA Division III in three different statistical categories.
Through April 25, Meehan, a sophomore attack from Simsbury, Conn., leads Division III in points per game (5.62) and is second in goals per game (3.69). With his seven point performance against rival Plymouth State on Tuesday, Meehan broke the Owl record for points (80) in a season. The previous mark of 78 was set by Bob Bonnes in 1999.
Meehan enters Saturday’s regular season finale against Southern Maine with 51 goals, 29 assists, and 80 points. He is eight goals shy of the season record (59) and needs five assists to surpass the season mark of 34. Bonnes holds the goal record while Joe Branciforte owns the assist mark.
An assists machine, Sawyer, a junior from Westbrook, Maine, tops Division III in assists (52) and assists per game (4.0). Sawyer, who recently broke her record for assists in a game (9) against Colby-Sawyer, is seven helpers short of breaking her season assist mark (59) set last season. She enters tomorrow’s game against Southern Maine with 20 goals, 52 assists, and 72 points.
The Keene State men’s lacrosse team (9-5, 6-0 LEC) has clinched the LEC regular season championship and the top-seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Owl women (11-4, 4-1 LEC) need a win against USM on Saturday to earn a share of the LEC regular season title and the top seed in the tournament.
