Women's Lacrosse: Owls Prey on Pilgrims, 14-9
Henniker, N.H. 4/5/10 – Keene State College’s Jill Kirk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) netted four goals and dished out three assists leading the Owls past the New England College Pilgrims 14-9 in women’s lacrosse action Monday afternoon. The Owls, who have won three straight, improve to 5-3 overall, while the loss drops the Pilgrims to 3-5 on the season.
Keene would open the game with four goals in the opening five minutes of the game, including two by Kirk. NEC’s Amanda Naime would get the Pilgrims on the board scoring an unassisted goal at the 21:14 mark making it a 4-1 game.
The Owls continued to control much of the offense as Keene would respond with three straight goals extending their lead to 7-1 with just 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Pilgrims closed out the half outscoring the Owls 3-1, including two goals by NEC’s Katie Palasz to head into halftime trailing 8-4.
Keene would pick up where they left off, breaking the lead open to 11-5 just 14 minutes into the second half. NEC would battle back netting three straight goals to cut the lead to 12-8 but the Owls would prove too tough down the stretch holding on for the 14-9 victory.
Keene finished the game outshooting NEC 34-32 and held the 28-20 advantage in groundballs.
In addition to Kirk, the Owls were led by Caitlyn Corace (Mahopac, N.Y.) who netted three goals and had an assist. Keene’s Lauren Sawyer (Westbrook, Maine) scored a goal and dished out a game-high four assists.
Leading the way for NEC was Katie Palasz who finished with three goals and an assist. NEC’s Amanda Naime and Chantale Lacroix each scored twice for the Pilgrims.
Picking up the win in net for KSC was sophomore Alyssa Marinaccio (Narragansett, R.I.) who finished with eight saves. In goal for NEC was Alexandra DiRico (Limerick, Pa.), who stopped 15 Owl shots on the afternoon in the losing effort.
