Owls dfeat RIC 16-7 for first LEC win of the season
KEENE, N.H. 4/4/09 - The Keene State women's lacrosse team defeated Rhode Island College 16-7 for its first Little East Conference win of the season on Saturday.
Winning two straight games for the first time this spring, KSC improves to 4-6 (1-1 LEC). R.I. College (1-7, 0-2 LEC) has dropped its last six games.
The Owls scored early and often, netting seven goals in the first six minutes of the game. Junior Dene Tully (Peabody, Mass.) had two goals and sophomore Lauren Sawyer (Westbrook, Me.) had a goal and three assists in the early uprising.
After RIC freshman Molly Voyer (Lincoln, R.I.) scored goals 20 seconds apart to make it 10-3, KSC freshman Brittany Bastarache (Somers, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season with one second on the clock to give the Owls an 11-3 halftime lead.
The two teams traded goals throughout the second half.
Sawyer finished the game with two goals and four assists for Keene State. Jamie Albert (Southington, Conn.), Sarah Munger (East Lyme, Conn.), and Bastarache each had two goals for the Owls.
Voyer had four goals and sophomore Suany Amonte (Warwick, R.I.) netted a goal to go with three assists to lead the Anchorwomen.
KSC senior goalie Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.) finished the game with 10 saves. Hilary Switzer (Woonsocket, R.I.), RIC's sophomore goalie, stopped nine shots.
Both teams return to action on Monday, Keene State hosts New England College and R.I. College travels to Salve Regina University for 4 p.m. games.
