KSC women's basketball team raises over $1,000 for former Owl Ben Maynard

KEENE, N.H. 9/12/11 – The combination of a nice, sunny late summer day and a worthy cause enabled the Keene State College women’s basketball team to raise over $1,000 for former Owl basketball player Ben Maynard at its annual charity car wash on Saturday.

Maynard, who recently underwent an operation to remove a brain tumor, was a four-year player for the Owls and a member of Keene State’s 2004 Elite-Eight NCAA Tournament team. “I’m very happy with the response, said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. “A lot of generous people came out and supported Ben which was great.”

“It means a lot more because he’s a former basketball player, an alum and a great guy,” said senior Sara Laudano.  “We’re just trying to raise some money to lessen his hospital expenses, so it’s a really great cause.”

In addition to raising money for a worthy cause, the carwash also serves as bonding experience for the KSC women’s basketball team, especially for freshman Rachael Brucks, who is from Suwanee, Georgia.  “It’s exciting to be up here with the team,” she said. “It’s like having a new family, since I live 19 hours away.”

Brucks also offered some advice to her northern teammates when it comes to washing a car.  “The secret is spraying between the cracks. You have to get every spot,” she said. “You have to have fun with it.  Everyone is complaining about getting wet but I’m enjoying it.”
