Keene State Women to Host Holiday Basketball Tournament
KEENE, N.H. 12/24/08 - The Keene State College women's basketball team will celebrate the New Year by hosting a holiday tournament, Friday and Saturday, Jan 2-3 at Spaulding Gum.
The bi-annual tournament gets underway with first-round games on Friday. Keene State (6-2) goes up against York (N.Y.) College (0-7) at 1 p.m. Mass College of Liberal Arts (6-2) faces Curry College (1-7) at 3 p.m. Consolation and championship games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively on Saturday.
After winning its first five games of the season, the Owls dropped a pair before ending the year with a 70-53 Little East Conference win over Rhode Island College back on Dec. 13. KSC Coach Keith Boucher hopes his team returns to campus ready to play.
"This time of season basketball at this level is tough because of the large gap in the schedule," he said. "You hope you can come back and fine tunes some things you weren't doing well and add some plays for the second half of the season. Hopefully everyone comes back rejuvenated and reenergized and ready to work."
This is the third time the KSC women have hosted a holiday tournament. The Owls have played in the championship game each time, defeating Manhattanville College (81-45) in 2004 and falling in overtime to Maine Maritime (77-74) in 2006.
"Hopefully this tournament will be the impetus for us to get a little better and get ready for a touch stretch of games," Boucher said.
Following the tournament, Keene State plays four home games in eight days, including a tough non-conference contest against Williams College and Little East games with UMass-Dartmouth and Western Connecticut.
