Owls shutout Huskies 5-0; Stay alive in LEC Tournament

Providence, RI-Second-seeded Keene State eliminated sixth-seeded Southern Maine, 5-0, in game four of the 2009 Little East Conference Softball Championship Softball Tournament at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Owls (23-13) advance to play tomorrow (2 p.m.) against an opponent to be determined. The Huskies (6-36) see their season come to an end.

Keene State scored three runs in fourth inning as senior center fielder Jenna Patnode (Surry, NH) led off with a single, stole second and came home on senior left fielder Allie D'Amato's (Bristol, CT) RBI triple. Senior third baseman Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, NY) doubled in D'Amato and eventually scored on an error.

The Owls added a single run in the fifth as Allenson plated one with an RBI fielder's choice. Keene State scored its final run in the seventh as Patnode walked and eventually came home on a wild pitch.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Savoie (Stratham, NH) went the distance for KSC, firing a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as she won her eighth (8-3) game of the year. USM sophomore Sarah Deroche (Portland, ME) took the loss (4-15), allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on four hits.

D'Amato went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Allenson knocked in two.
