Nine Owls Honored by Little East Conference
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. 10/26/09 - The Little East Conference honored nine Keene State college student-athletes this week, including a sweep of all four cross country awards.
Men's Cross
Country
Runner of the Week
Jared Samuel (Londonberry, N.H.), Senior,
Keene State College
Samuel placed second to lead Keene State to the Saratoga
Invitational championship on Saturday. He was the first Owls'
runner to the finish line, covering the wet and sloppy 8-kilometer
course in a time of 25 minutes, 31 seconds. Keene State, ranked
sixth in New England, placed all five of their scorers in the
top-10 to claim the championship.
Rookie of the Week
Andrew Sears (Derry, N.H.), Freshman, Keene State
College
Sears was the Owls' seventh runner across the finish line
at the Saratoga Invitational on Saturday. The freshman placed 33rd
overall with a time of 27 minutes, 28 seconds. Keene State
won the team title with 23 points.
Women's Cross Country
Runner of the Week
Allison Chamberlain (Scarborough, Maine), Junior,
Keene State College
Chamberlain navigated through the muddy 5-kilometer course
to finish second with a time of 18 minutes, five second, leading
the Owls to the Saratoga Invitational championship on Saturday. The
Keene State women, ranked eighth in New England, placed four of its
runners in the top-10 to win the team title with 53 points.
Rookie of the Week
Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.), Freshman, Keene
State College
Fitter was the Owls fifth finishing runner at Saturday's
Saratoga Invitational. The Branford, Conn. native helped
Keene State win the team championship at the 5-kilometer event,
placing 28th with a time of 19 minutes, 39 seconds.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week
Carly Benning (Brewster, Mass.), Senior, Forward, Keene
State College
Benning made each of her goals count this past week, scoring the
decisive marker in a pair of Keene State victories. The Brewster,
Mass. native netted the game-winning goal against Little East foes
Salem State and Fitchburg State. Her marker in the 41st minute
against the Falcons coupled with the Framingham State loss at UMass
Dartmouth forged a three-way tie in the conference standings for
second place entering the final weekend of the regular season
schedule.
Defensive Player of the Week
Erin Dallas (Marlow, N.H.),Senior, Back, Keene State
College
Dallas anchored the Keene State defensive third in a 2-0 week for
Keene State. The Owls defense posted a 1.5 goals against average in
victories over Salem State and Fitchburg State. The Marlow, N.H.
product became the program's all-time leader in assists,
registering a pair of helpers in the victory over the Lady Vikings.
She also added an assist against the Falcons.
Men's Soccer
Defensive Player of the Week
Rob Musto (Guilford, Conn.), Junior, Back, Keene
State College
The Guilford, Conn. native turned in solid defensive
performances in a pair of shutout victories last week. Musto and
company limited Framingham State to four shots on goal in
Wednesday's match and Western Connecticut to just three in Sunday's
contest. Keene State has posted eight shutouts on the campaign.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Tom Conran (South Windsor, Conn.), Junior,
Keene State College
Making back-to-back starts for the first time in
his career, Conran posted shutouts over Framingham State and
Western Connecticut, making three saves in each match. He has
yet to allow a goal in four starts on the campaign.
Rookie of the Week
Shawn Shand (Keene, N.H.), Freshman,
Forward, Keene State College
Shand had two goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for
the Owls. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over
Framingham State Wednesday, while adding a marker and helper in
Keene State's 3-0 win over Western Connecticut on Sunday.
Shand's assist set up the game-winning goal against the Colonials.
