SPRINGFIELD, Mass. 4/21/12 – Keene State College junior Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) led the Owls at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. on Friday night, by posting a strong NCAA qualifying time in the 800 meters. The rest of the KSC squad, that was at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday afternoon, was led by senior Kevin Hoyt (Newtown, Conn.) and his victory in the 5,000 meter race.
Fitter ran the 800 meter race in a time of 2:14.95 to finish in 43rd and post the strong provisional time in the event.
Hoyt won the 5,000 meter race in Springfield, Mass., in a time of 15:56.53 to take home first place.
Also finishing strong on the track for the men, senior Elias Grijalva (Manchester, N.H.) placed second in the 400 meter race in a time of 51.37. Also finishing in second place, sophomore Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) hit the finish line in 4:00.27.
In the field events, junior Glenn Guilmette (Kensington, N.H.) finished second in the javelin with a toss of 195'-1''. Freshman Ben Keach (Newfields, N.H.) placed fourth in the javelin (168'-2'') and third in the discus (131'-11'').
For the women, Fitter also made the trip to Springfield on Saturday, and won the 1500 meter race in a time of 4:46.86. Freshman Melanie Escalante (New Canaan, Conn.) took first place in the 400 meter hurdles, in a time of 1:08.58.
In the field events, freshman Samantha Folland (Newfields, N.H.) earned fourth place in the discus with a heave of 108'-2''.
The Owls return to the track next weekend, as they will head to Westfield State for Little East Conference Championships.
