Friends of Ben Maynard hold successful fundraiser

KEENE, N.H. 10/18/11 – Friends of Ben Maynard hosted a highly successful and fun fund-raiser for the former Owl men’s basketball player last Saturday at the Keene Elks Lodge on Roxbury Street in Keene. All the proceeds from the event will help defray medical expenses for Maynard, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last June.

A proverbial who’s who of former Keene State men’s basketball players were on hand, including members of the Owls’ 2003-04 Elite Eight and 2006-07 Sweet-16 NCAA teams.  Guests lined the wall with assorted pot-luck dishes and desserts and a live band provided entertainment.  Several professional teams and leagues including the NBA and Boston Celtics as well Keene State basketball and baseball teams donated items for the raffle.  Past Keene State basketball uniforms were won and modeled by the winners. 

The Friends of Ben Maynard would also like to make a special acknowledgement to the Pub Restaurant,  www.Dreambats.com and a very generous check from Little East Conference member Rhode Island College. 

Noted for his rebounding and strong defensive play, Maynard, a four-year player (2002-06) for the Owls, played on Keene State’s 2004 Elite-Eight NCAA tournament team. “Ben was a very unselfish player and I think those same qualities transferred over to his life off the court,” said Keene State men’s basketball coach Colbert. “He never feels bad for himself and has maintained a positive attitude. The way Ben is handling the situation is inspiring.”

Maynard, who had surgery to remove the tumor on June 20, recently began chemotherapy. 

Maynard, who resides in Keene, said he keeps in touch with many of his former teammates and appreciates all the help he’s received from his family and friends. “I couldn’t put into words how much I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers,” he said.
