Former Owl Kathan signs with German basketball team

KEENE, N.H., 6/25/10 – Former Keene State College men’s basketball standout Tyler Kathan is on the move again.  After playing last year in England for the Leicester Warriors, the talented forward has signed a contract to play this season in Germany for the Iserlohn Kangaroos.

“I’m a little bit nervous, but excited,” said Kathan from his home in Ludlow, Vt.  He plans on leaving for Germany late in July.

Kathan had a terrific first season playing professional ball in England.  Appearing in 18 games, he averaged a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors, leading them to a 13-9 record and a fifth-place league finish.

Kathan’s strong play caught the several German teams, including the Kangaroos.  “I’ve been in contact with a couple teams from Germany since last year,” said Kathan, a former All-America and Little East player of the year at Keene State.  “They reached out and got a hold of me and I thought it would be a good fit.”

According to Kathan his new team in Germany is a little bit better with stronger players.  “I’ve heard nothing but good things about the team,” he said.

Kathan said it took him a little while to adjust to a different style of play in England.  “It was a little bit slower and more physical,” he said.  “It’s not as much as a team game.  If you get the ball, you better shoot because it’s not coming back.”

However, Kathan had not complaints about the perks off the court.  Since he was the only American on the team, he had his own apartment as well as a car.

Kathan had the opportunity to visit France and Italy, but has never traveled to Germany.  “I guess I need to brush up on my German,” he said.

The former Owl said he’s enjoying playing ball in Europe and is very happy and proud of himself for continuing his basketball career.
