2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Tournament Day 2 Recap
KEENE, N.H. (12/27/09) - On day two of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Tournament Lebanon, Milford, Souhegan and Conant all advanced in the winners bracket with victories.
Smithfield (RI)38, Lebanon 52
KEENE, N.H. (12/27/09) - On day two of the 2009 Cheshire
Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the
first game was a back-and-forth battle with the Lebanon Raiders
defeating the Smithfield (RI) Sentinels 52-38 on Sunday afternoon
at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Smithfield (RI) jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter
paced by Aaron Brown and Chris Bennett with three points apiece.
Lebanon would go on a 10-2 run to close out the period on a layup
and a foul from Raider forward Jacob Woodward for the 13-10
lead.
In the second quarter, Sentinel senior Matthew Benoit came off the
bench to chip in with six points, two rebounds and an assist.
Lebanon countered with Woodward's seven in the period for 13 total
points to take a 23-22 lead into the locker room.
Lebanon outscored Smithfield (RI) 13-8 in the third quarter to take
a 36-30 lead heading into the final quarter. Senor James Kane's
put-back layup gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the game up
to that point.
In the fourth, the Raiders continued to apply pressure and jumped
out to a 39-30 lead on a fast-break steal and layup from Woodward.
Smithfield (RI) hung tough, with just over five minutes remaining,
Sentinel forward Kyle Morvan's old-fashioned three point play cut
the lead to 39-33.
Smithfield (RI) continued to cut into the lead, and got as
close as five on a bucket from Brown with 2:26 left in the fourth.
But that is as close as they would get as Woodward finished with 20
points en route to the 52-38 victory.
Woodward also had a game-high 15 boards for the double-double in
the win. Kane also reached double digits in points with 11 for
Lebanon.
Morvan led the Sentinel's with 14 points and nine rebounds in the
losing effort.
Lebanon will play again tomorrow, December 28th, against the winner
of Milford and Coe-Brown at 7 p.m. Smithfield will take on the
loser of that contest at 4 p.m. at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Coe-Brown 49, Milford 77
KEENE, N.H. (12/27/09) - On day two of the 2009 Cheshire
Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the
Milford Spartans speared the Coe-Brown Bears XX-XX on Sunday
afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium. The Spartans led by as many as 32
en-route to the victory.
Milford came out of the gates firing, scoring the game's first six
points forcing Coe-Brown to call a timeout less than 80 seconds
into the game. The Bear's cut into the Spartans lead, but junior
guard Mike O'Loughlin scored 10 of Milford's 14 first quarter
points, en route to the 14-10 lead at the first break.
In the second quarter the Spartans exploded for 25 points, led by
10 points from guard Jamie Holder in under two minutes for a 39-22
lead at the half. Junior guard Mike Mitchell five points, six
assists and three boards in the first half and led a defense that
forced 13 turnovers with two steals.
The second half was much of the same as Coe-Brown sophomore Skyler
Mitchell was the only Bear to finish in double figures with 15.
Milford forced 25 turnovers and dished out 20 assists, led by
Mitchell's nine on the game.
O'Louglin led all scorers with 20 points and also had a team-high
six boards. Holder finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from
the floor.
With the victory Milford will play tomorrow, December 28th, at 7
p.m. against Lebanon, while Coe-Brown will face Smithfield at 4
p.m.
Monadnock 36, Souhegan 61
KEENE, N.H. (12/27/09) - On day two of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's
Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Souhegan
toppled Monadnock by a score of 61-36
For the Huskies, Jay Perry scored nine points and ripped down 10
rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Cory Barnes and
Brandyn Torrey each chipped in with seven points. The Huskies were
hurt by scoring a combined 11 points in the second and third
quarters, while the Sabers scored 28 in the same quarters.
Souhegan was paced by senior forward D.J. Petropulos and his 15
points on five-of-eight shooting from the field and five-of-seven
from the charity stripe. Sophomore Devin Gilligan and junior Wes
Crowell each pitched in with 11 points. Junior forward Nick Hession
pulled down a team high five caroms.
Souhegan plays again tomorrow, December 28, at 8:30 against Conant.
Monadnock will also resume play tomorrow against Keene High at
5:30.
Keene 36, Conant 45
KEENE, N.H. (12/27/09) - On day two of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Keene was defeated Conant by a score of 45 to 36.
Conant jumped out to a quick lead and extended it to 13 by the time the first quarter had ended. The lead would eventually be cut to four at the end of the half when Keene stifled the Huskies, allowing just two points in the entire second quarter.
Conant was led by Jimmy Peard who scored 18 points to lead all scorers, and was the team leader in rebounds with 11. Sean Martin added 10 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists. Also for the Orioles, Kemph Kim was perfect from the line going four-of-four and forced five turnovers with five steals and assisted on four hoops.
Theodore Speas from Keene was the game leader on the boards with 14 and was second for the Black Birds in scoring with seven points. Nicholas Nelson led the Black Birds with nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
Both teams shot below 30% from the field for the game, but Conant was 14-of-21 from the line (67%) while Keene was five-of-sixteen (31%) from the charity stripe.
Conant will hit the hard wood again tomorrow, December 28, when the take on Souhegan at 8:30 P.M. Keene Will square off against regional foe Monadnock at 5:30 at Spaulding Gymnasium.
