Keene State Announces Athletic Awards

'KEENE, N.H. 4/27/07 - Jeremy Schilling and Sara Joyce were named Keene State College's male and female Athletes of the Year respectively at the College's 2006-06 Athletic Awards Dinner held Friday night at Spaulding Gym.

In addition, Chris Koenig was the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Keene State women's swim/dive team and men's cross country squad were presented with the Don Carle Award for having the highest GPA among Owl teams. Because the athletic season is not completed, players from the previous spring are eligible for awards.

A four-year member of the Keene State baseball team, Schilling capped his Owl career (2003-06) last spring by becoming KSC's first-ever Little East Conference Player of the year.  Also selected to All-NEIBA and All-LEC teams, the outfielder from Centerville, Mass., led the Owls in a multiple of categories including hits (74), runs (48), stolen bases (21), and batting average (.418) as a senior.   He finished his career third on Keene State's all-time batting (.372) and RBI (86) list and set career records for runs (111), hits (189), doubles (41), and stolen bases (40).

Sara Joyce completed her three-year field hockey career (2004-06) as one of the Keene State top goalies.  Named to both National Field Hockey Coaches Association and womensfieldhockey.com All-American teams last fall, the senior from Hampstead, N.H., completed her final season with a 1.29 GAA, a Division III leading .895 save percentage, and nine shutouts. Selected as the Little East Defensive Player of the Year, she is second in wins (43), third in GAA (1.20), shutouts (19), and save pct. (.864) on KSC's all-time lists.

A junior from Saratoga, New York, Koenig is a dean's list student majoring in geography. A valuable member of the undefeated (12-0) and 22nd ranked Keene State men's lacrosse team, Koenig is a key defenseman for the Owls, who excels in man-down situations.  A quiet person off the field, Koenig transforms into an intense competitor on the field.  KSC is ranked third in the country in scoring defense (4.90).

KOENIG NAMED KEENE STATE'S SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

KEENE, N.H. 5/2/07 - Chris Koenig recently received Keene State's scholar-athlete award as the College's annual awards dinner.

"This award reflects a lot of hard work," said Koenig.  "It's all about managing time, especially during the season.  You have to be willing to make sacrifices."

A key defenseman on the undefeated and 17th ranked KSC lacrosse team, Koenig excels in man-down situations.  "Chris is a very quiet person off the field who becomes a very intense player when he goes into a game," said KSC Coach Mark Theriault.  "He's a very smart player.  You don't have to tell him things twice, he usually get it right a way."

A member of a KSC defense ranked third in the country in scoring defense (4.90), Koenig along with his Owl teammates will host UMass-Boston in a Little East Conference semifinal game on Thursday.

"Sara was incredible this year," said KSC Coach Amy Watson.  "Her statistics don't say it all.  She was a strong leader on the field and had the respect of the entire team. Because of her play in goal, we were able to hold our own against some of the top teams in the region."

"My teammates were so supportive," Joyce added.  "I appreciate everything they did.  If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been so successful."
