Keene State Finishes Seventh at National Cheerleading Championship

KEENE, N.H. 4/15/09 - The 16-member Keene State cheerleading squad tied for seventh at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Competing in the all-women division for the first time, the Owl Cheerleaders competed in the preliminary round against 18 other Division III squads from across the country.  KSC was one nine teams that made the cut and advanced to the finals. The team had a great performance on day two and finished by tying Montclair State University for seventh place.

"It was really fun. A lot of my teammates are really young, so it was a new experience for them," said Shyla Francoeur, a junior from Nashua.  The competition is really intense.  We had a shaky day #1, but we came back and had a perfect routine in the finals and moved up in the standings."

Linda Lawton, the Owls' second-year coach, was very pleased with the teams' performance. "The team wrote a new history for the Keene State Cheerleading squad and represented KSC to the fullest in Daytona," she said.  "The stakes are set high for next season, but the cheerleaders are confident that a top-five finish is within reach."
