Five Owls to play in the NECBL

KEENE, N.H. 6/3/10 – Keene State College will be well represented in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) that begins its season on Friday.

In addition to coaches Marty Testo and Dan Moylan, who return for their third season in the Keene Swamp Bats dugout, the Owls will have five players on the field.

Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.), Bobby Doyon (Keene. N.H.), and Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) will be playing for the Sanford Mainers while Corey Vogt (Suffield, Conn.) and Eric Perrault (Salem, N.H.) will suit up for the North Adams Steeple Cats.  DiPrato, Vogt, and Perreault recently signed temporary contracts and will be looking for a long-term stay with their respective teams.

“It says a lot about the Keene State program and the type of players we’re finally getting here,” said Testo, who also serves as the Owls’ associate head coach.  “Given the opportunity, these players can play at the Division I or II level.  They just chose to play at Keene State.”

“It’s a great opportunity for them,” said Keene State Head Coach Ken Howe. “I hope they get the most out of the experience and show other teams that Keene State has players capable of playing in the league.”

Davis, a junior pitcher, returns for his third season with the Mainers.  He posted a 2.13 ERA in eight appearances last summer.  Davis says he’s excited about having a couple of his Owl teammates joining him this season. Doyon, a junior outfielder and the Little East player of the year, and DiPrato will be staying with the Davis’, who are serving as a host family.

“It’s a great opportunity,” said DiPrato, a junior who split time between first and behind the plate for KSC. “Hopefully I can do well and get a longer contract.”

“The NECBL is a quality league with some real good players, said Perrault, a freshman pitcher.  “I’m looking forward to the challenge of facing some tough hitters.”

Perrault and Vogt, a hard-throwing reliever, will go up against their college coach on Sunday when the Swamp Bats travel to North Adams (Mass.).

Testo says the Keene State players are in for a terrific experience.  “It opens up so many doors for them,” he said.  “They not only get a chance to meet kids from all over the country, but get exposed to a different brand of baseball.”

Several other Keene State players have hooked on with teams this summer.  Sophomore pitcher Jeff Pelkey is playing in the New Jersey Collegiate League while 10 Owl players are on the roster of the Keene Blue Jays of the Central New England Baseball Association.
