Doyon Named LEC Player of the Year

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. 5/19/10 – Junior rightfielder Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) earned three  awards on Wednesday, in addition to being named the Little East Conference Player of the Year,  he was also selected as a member of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) and ECAC first-teams.

Doyon is just the second Owls’ student-athlete to be named the top player in the conference. The three time All-Little East, first-team selection as an outfielder ranked among the conference leaders in nearly every offensive statistical category, including sitting atop the Little East standings in home runs (10), slugging percentage (.708), and total bases (121). A starter in all 41 games, the Keene, N.H. product recorded a .421 batting average (72-for-171) to eclipse the .400 mark for the third consecutive season. Doyon hit safely in 37 contests this spring, including two separate 15-game hitting streaks. He paced Keene State in runs batted in with 51, including driving in multiple runs 19 times on the campaign. On May 1, Doyon turned in a season-high six RBI against Southern Maine with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish. He also contributed in the field with 90 put outs in 92 chances for a .979 fielding percentage.

Owl reliever Corey Vogt (Suffield, Conn.) joined Doyon on the All-LEC 1st Team. The junior appeared in 15 games for KSC out of the pen, throwing 23.2 innings. Vogt, who currently is second on the team in saves with four, struck out 28 batters and leads all KSC pitchers with a 1.14 ERA. The reliever has only allowed three earned runs the entire season, and last against Curry College on April 5th.

Seniors Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.), Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) and junior Tyler Diprato (Suffield, Conn.) earned All-LEC 2nd-Team honors for the Owls.

Cipolla spent most of the season behind the plate, occasionally being the designated-hitter, in the clean-up spot. The senior-captain goes into the NCAA tournament with a .373 average on 59 hits with 32 RBI’s on the season. Cipolla had his best game of the season against Williams on April 7th, when he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Patnode, who had played both the outfield and infield for the Owls this season, is tied for second on the team in home-runs with seven on the year. The local product, has also drove in 37 runs, with a .376 batting average and a .618 slugging percentage. Patnode had his best game of the season back on March 15th, against regional foe Western New England on their spring break trip to Arizona where he went 3-for-5 with four RBI’s, four runs scored and a homerun.

Diprato, played most of his season at first base for the Owls, and moved to the leadoff spot in the lineup more than halfway through the season. He leads the Owls in on-base percentage (.523), broke the KSC single-season record for walks (39), and has yet to commit an error in 295 chances. Sacrificing his power numbers to bat at the top of the order, the junior is batting .390 with two home runs and 22 RBI’s on the campaign. Diprato’s best game of the year was the LEC opener against Western Conn. where he went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s, three runs scored, a double and two walks.
