Owls drop LEC Tournament opener to Eastern Conn. 7-3

            GORHAM, MAINE 5/8/09 - The Keene State baseball team will have to fight its way out of the loser's bracket to defend its Little East Conference championship after losing to Eastern Conn. 7-3 on Friday at Southern Maine Field.

            The day began early for the Owls, who had to resume their suspended first-round game against Eastern Conn.

            The game was picked up with the Warrior's leading 6-3 after seven.

            The Owls went down in order in the top of the eighth, but ECSU added an insurance run when Jim Schult took a delivery by Owl pitcher Rob Delbuono (Trumbull, Conn.) over the left field fence.

            Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) led off the ninth with a single up the middle. Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) and Cody Callahan (Seekonk, Mass.) went down swinging, and Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.) grounded out to second to end the game.

            Jeff Raymond (Amston, Conn.) who started the game for KSC on Thursday took the loss (4-2).

            Matt Fontaine improved his record to 6-1 with the win.  Wes Dutton pitched the final two innings and notched the save.

           Keene State (23-15) will face UMass-Boston (19-21) in today's second game at 10 a.m.  Eastern Conn. (33-6) will play Southern Maine (33-5) at 1:30 p.m.
