Former Owl Mabey Pitching in Arizona Winter League
SAN LUIS, ARIZ. 1/30/09 - The baseball season has begun for former Keene State College pitcher Phil Mabey. The Williamstown, Mass., native was the starting pitcher for the San Luis (Ariz.) Atleticos in the team's 2009 Arizona Winter League opener on Friday night.
Mabey (1-0) got the start for the Atleticos and pitched five strong innings to earn the victory as San Luis defeated Team Canada 14-1. He allowed just two hits and a run during his five inning stint.
"Our pitchers did a nice job," said former major leaguer Greg Cadaret, the manager of the Atleticos team. "All of them had a few jitters, but that was to be expected coming of the winter without much throwing. They settled in and did a nice job."
Mabey, a four-year hurler at Keene State, completed his Owl career with a 14-9 record with 113 strikeouts, 66 walks, and a 3.99 ERA. As a junior, he earned second-team All-LEC honors, had a career-high nine strikeouts against Springfield College, and picked up an LEC tournament win over UMass Boston and NCAA victory vs. Wheaton College.
The Arizona Winter League is an instructional league that does not employ players. It provides opportunities to collegiate, professional, and free agent players to develop their skills. Over 130 players will participate in the 2009 AWL with experience levels from collegiate to top professional levels in the U.S. and foreign countries. Last year over 50 AWL players left with professional contracts.
